I am exhausted but flickr tells me I’ve been signed up for a year, so here’s to it.

The furniture is chattering loudly, more than ever before. Tomes on decolonization in South Asia discuss nation-building with Eastern European novelists steps from the bickering pots and pans. At night, I hear my piano crying for me to free him from the cinderblock walls of his storage unit.

Spring is lovely, I’ve taken many photos. I’ll be back to post them soon enough.

Description: Thomas Smillie was the Smithsonian’s first photographer and curator of photography. He and his studio staff documented the institution’s physical buildings and work spaces, including curators’ offices, new museum buildings, exhibition installations, and the furniture used to store objects.

Creator/Photographer: Thomas Smillie
Birth Date: 1843
Death Date: 1917

Born in Edinburgh, Scotland, in 1843, Thomas William Smillie immigrated to the United States with his family when he five years old. After studying chemistry and medicine at Georgetown University, he took a job as a photographer at the Smithsonian Institution, where he stayed for nearly fifty years until his death in 1917. Smillie’s duties and accomplishments at the Smithsonian were vast: he documented important events and research trips, photographed the museum’s installations and specimens, created reproductions for use as printing illustrations, performed chemical experiments for Smithsonian scientific researchers, and later acted as the head and curator of the photography lab. Smillie’s documentation of each Smithsonian exhibition and installation resulted in an informal record of all of the institution’s art and artifacts. In 1913 Smillie mounted an exhibition on the history of photography to showcase the remarkable advancements that had been made in the field but which he feared had already been forgotten.

Medium: Cyanotype

Culture: American

Geography: USA

Date: 1890

Collection: Thomas Smillie Collection (Record Unit 95) – Thomas Smillie served as the first official photographer for the Smithsonian Institution from 1870 until his death in 1917. As head of the photography lab as well as its curator, he was responsible for photographing all of the exhibits, objects, and expeditions, leaving an informal record of early Smithsonian collections.

Me sometime last autumn in a very comfortable chair inside Retro Kafe in the part of town named Nordnes taking a shot. Actual pretty much in the vincinity of the Corps de Garde, which is the yellow building in this shot.

The place doubles as cafe and shop for furniture and lamps from the fifties, sixties and seventies. As stuff wait for new home guests are using them, makes for a very nice cafe.

Had I lived closer place may given Chaos a run for my cafe budget!

The outside of the recycling facility or charity shop in my hometown, puurs in Belgium.People can come by and bring their used furniture, appliances, toys, you name it to this shop and they’ll process and repair it and sell it on.I applaud these kind of initiatives more so because they employ people whom otherwise would not be able to get a "regular" job. This initiative is government subsidized.
A week ago I went in and made an appointment with the local manager to take some photos, inside and outside.I could not just walk in and start shooting. That would be inappropriate. The building really sticks out with this light greenish color.
I’ve upped the colors a bit in Lightroom.

I have inherited this furniture which has sentimental value. I have called a few moving companies, but so far the shipping estimates I have received exceed the value of the furniture. Does anyone have any ideas?

Best answer:

Answer by Daphna
All moving companies are costly, try to get some more quotes from moving companies. If this doesnt work then hire a truck and move your furniture yourself.

Harijs Stradiņš – a craftsman working with natural shape wood processing, has been designing furniture and other interior design elements since 1997 selecting the best parts of the tree from top to root. In his works Harijs uses such materials as stone, glass, hammered works, fabric, clay and other natural materials to be able to make common design for a particular room.

Kopš 1997. gada dabiska koka formu apstrādes meistars Harijs Stradiņš sadarbojas ar koku, kā dabas elementu, mēbeļu un dizaina elementu radīšanā, izmantojot to pēc iespējas pilnīgi (no saknes līdz gaotnei). Domājot par telpas kopējā dizaina risinājumu, savos darbos Harijs Stradiņš izmanto arī akmeni, stiklu, metālkalumus, audumu, mālu un citus dabas elementus.
